Sportscaster Bob Costas has criticized the Democratic Party for feigning surprise over President Biden's recent debate performance. Costas argues that Biden's cognitive decline has been evident for years, and he questions whether the party has been intentionally misleading the public.

Sports broadcaster Bob Costas has unleashed a scathing attack on the Democratic Party for its purported surprise over President Biden's dismal debate performance. According to Costas, Biden's cognitive decline has been apparent for years, and he accuses the party of either ignoring it or deliberately downplaying it.

Appearing on CNN's "Smerconish" Saturday morning, Costas slammed liberals for not acknowledging Biden's mental deterioration sooner, thereby allowing for the identification of a more suitable candidate to challenge former President Trump.

"That one atrocious night was simply writ-large what could be seen for years and years, that he is in serious decline," Costas asserted. He added that the situation "makes you wonder whether we've been gaslit by the Democrats."

Host Michael Smerconish prompted the discussion by inquiring whether party members were genuinely caught off guard by Biden's performance or if individuals like Costas were the only ones willing to address the elephant in the room.

"Yeah, I think it's the latter, and it only became more overwhelmingly obvious with the debate performance," Costas replied. He dismissed the notion that Biden merely had a bad night, emphasizing that his cognitive issues have been apparent "for years."

"Nobody should be president when they're 85 or 86, including the ghost of Abraham Lincoln, but this guy is clearly in decline at this point. And part of the job, leaving aside whether he can do it for the next four years, is winning the job. And as you just laid out, that seems nearly impossible at this point," Costas declared.

He challenged the Democratic argument that party unity is essential due to the threat posed by Trump. "No, that's exactly why Joe Biden must be ushered out," he countered.

Costas shared that he has been urging the party to replace Biden for over a year and stressed the urgency of his advice in the current climate. "Now, we can no longer indulge [Biden's] delusions," he asserted.

He questioned whether Democrats truly believe that Biden can endure four more years and fulfill the job's demands. "These are desperate times and they call for measures that are appropriate to the circumstances," he added.

Smerconish suggested that without the debate, individuals like actor George Clooney, who recently penned a New York Times op-ed criticizing Biden's decline, would have continued to pretend that Biden was capable.

Costas condemned this attitude, stating, "This has been so overwhelmingly obvious for so long. You don't need a degree in public policy from Harvard to see it and to say it – if you're willing to say it – anymore than you need a degree from MIT to say two plus two is four. And it makes you wonder whether we've been gaslit by the Democrats."

"This had to have been obvious to people surrounding the president, people who observed the president," he said. "Wouldn't it have been an act of patriotism, if that's not too overblown a word in this case, to lay that out?"

Costas's comments have sparked a significant debate within the Democratic Party and among pundits. Some agree with his assessment, arguing that the party has been in denial about Biden's cognitive decline for far too long. Others maintain that Costas is exaggerating the extent of Biden's problems and that he is simply trying to undermine the president.

Regardless of one's political affiliation, Costas's remarks have raised important questions about the responsibility of the media and political parties in addressing the health and capabilities of our leaders.
