Bodycam video released by the Suffolk County District Attorney's office offers a chilling glimpse into the desperate struggle to save an 11-month-old boy from a fentanyl overdose in Long Island, New York.

The incident unfolded in January 2023, when police officers arrived at a Lake Grove home to find the unresponsive child. First responders attempted to resuscitate the infant but were unsuccessful.
Recognizing the urgent need for specialized medical care, the ambulance diverted from its planned route to Stony Brook University Hospital and pulled over for a Suffolk County police medic to join the rescue effort.

With the child struggling to breathe, rescuers administered Narcan, an opioid-antidote, and anxiously watched for a response. Moments later, the child began crying, a reassuring sign that life was returning.
The mother, who was present in the ambulance, erupted in cheers as the medical team's efforts proved successful.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the child's father, identified only as John Doe to protect the infant's privacy, was responsible for exposing the child to fentanyl. He faces charges of assault, child endangerment, and drug possession.
The investigation led authorities to Robert Mauro, a 39-year-old alleged drug dealer, who was arrested and charged with manslaughter for the death of a 31-year-old woman who overdosed on the same batch of fentanyl.
Prosecutors allege that Mauro knew the potency of his drugs, as evidenced by a conversation on his phone where he claimed to have been "knocked out" for hours after using them himself.
Both men, John Doe and Robert Mauro, are being held without bail as they await trial.
The bodycam footage serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences of drug abuse and the heroic efforts of first responders who risk their lives to save others.
While the infant survived this near-fatal overdose, the incident underscores the urgent need for increased awareness about the dangers of fentanyl and for increased access to drug treatment programs to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
