Boxing legend Mike Tyson experienced a medical scare during a flight from Miami to Los Angeles on Sunday, causing passengers to worry and prompt medical assistance. However, Tyson's representatives have since assured fans that the 57-year-old is doing well after the incident, which occurred just before landing.
Tyson's representatives explained in an email to The New York Post that he "became nauseous and dizzy due to an ulcer flare up 30 minutes before landing." They added that he is "appreciative to the medical staff that were there to help him."
The incident was initially reported as a "medical emergency" by In Touch Weekly, which stated that paramedics boarded the plane and that an announcement was made asking for a doctor. Tyson was reportedly in first class, and the flight was delayed by 25 minutes while paramedics attended to him.
The medical scare comes ahead of Tyson's much-anticipated fight against Jake Paul, the YouTuber-turned-boxer, on July 20 at AT&T Stadium. The fight has been sanctioned as a competitive boxing match, meaning it will count toward both boxers' professional records.
Tyson has been open about his physical struggles during training for the fight, stating that his body feels like "s--- right now" due to soreness. Despite the challenges, Tyson's signature confidence has not waned, and he has expressed certainty in his ability to defeat Paul.
Meanwhile, Paul, 27, has exuded confidence throughout the press tour, stating that he intends to "show the world that [he] can outbox Mike Tyson, prove everyone wrong, and show that [he] will be the one doing the killing."
The last time Tyson fought in a boxing ring was in November 2020, when he faced Roy Jones Jr. in an exhibition match that ended in a draw. Prior to that, his last sanctioned fight was in June 2005.
Tyson's latest medical scare has raised concerns among fans and boxing experts, who have questioned whether he should still be competing at his age. However, Tyson's representatives have emphasized that he is doing well and is determined to step into the ring against Paul.
The upcoming fight between Tyson and Paul has generated significant attention and anticipation, with fans eager to witness whether the seasoned boxing legend can overcome the rising star of the boxing scene. The match is expected to provide an unforgettable spectacle, showcasing both the past and present of the sport.
