"I was learning about things the same time that the world was and I just took it more deeply and personally," Grier said. "I couldn't even get through it."
Shields, who shares Grier and her older sister Rowan with her husband Chris Henchy, admitted that she had not prepared Grier for the revelation, believing that their close relationship and her daughter's understanding of the industry would shield her from the emotional impact.

"I didn’t prepare her," Shields said. "It was a miscommunication. I had explained it was an exploration of sexualization of women in my industry but I was naively thinking that because we had such a solid, healthy, fairly normal existence and I’m not completely damaged that she would say, ‘Wow you’ve come through a lot but look where we are today.’"
However, Shields' assumption proved to be wrong. Grier's reaction to the news was one of shock and helplessness, highlighting the profound impact that sexual assault can have on victims and their families.

"She ended up missing the happy part," Shields said. "She felt helpless, and just as a mom, we make mistakes and sometimes we make assumptions."
Shields acknowledged that her experience is a reminder that communication and open dialogue are essential in helping victims process their trauma. She said that she has learned from her daughter's response and is committed to listening and supporting her children through their own experiences.
"Part of being a mom is learning from your kids," Shields said. "I’ve learned a lot by listening to them."
"Pretty Baby," a two-part documentary series, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in February 2023 and provides an intimate look at Shields' life and career, including her experiences with sexual assault and objectification in the entertainment industry.
