On Wednesday, a 58-year-old man was taken into custody for allegedly attempting to run down several Jewish students and a rabbi with a vehicle outside a Yeshiva in Brooklyn, New York.
A New York man faces charges after being arrested in connection with a disturbing incident near a Brooklyn Yeshiva on Wednesday morning.
Just before 11:30 a.m., the New York Police Department (NYPD) responded to reports of a vehicle attempting to intentionally harm pedestrians on Glenwood Road within the 63rd Precinct.
According to the NYPD, a 58-year-old man was behind the wheel of a white 2011 Ford Crown Victoria when he drove onto the sidewalk, targeting Jewish students and a rabbi outside the Vien Yeshiva in the Canarsie neighborhood.
Surveillance footage obtained by Yeshiva World News captures the harrowing incident. The video shows the suspect's vehicle swerving towards a group of students, narrowly missing them. The suspect then executes a U-turn, returning to the scene and mounting the curb onto school property.
Fortunately, there were no injuries reported. A short while later, the suspect was apprehended by law enforcement. His identity has not yet been released.
The FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force is assisting the NYPD in the investigation. The FBI has confirmed it is aware of the incident, but the lead agency is the NYPD.
The NYPD has declined to comment at this time, and further details are expected to emerge as the investigation progresses.
This incident comes amid a surge of anti-Semitic incidents across the country, particularly on college campuses. This latest incident has sparked concern and outrage within the Jewish community and beyond.
In response to the alarming rise in antisemitism, the U.S. House recently passed the Antisemitism Awareness Act. This act aims to expand the legal definition of antisemitism to better combat it on college campuses.
The Jewish community in Brooklyn and elsewhere is calling for an end to hatred and violence. They demand that authorities take swift action to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The incident has ignited discussions about the need for increased security measures around Jewish institutions and the importance of education to combat hate and prejudice. Law enforcement and community leaders are working together to implement strategies to ensure the safety of Jewish communities.
