NBA Hall of Famer Julius Erving has come out in support of USA Basketball's decision to leave Caitlin Clark off the Olympic team, believing that it is in the best interest of her long-term development.

Caitlin Clark's exclusion from the USA Women's Basketball Olympic roster has sparked controversy, with many questioning the decision to overlook one of the brightest young stars in the game. However, NBA Hall of Famer Julius Erving has defended the organization's tough choice, arguing that it could ultimately benefit Clark's career trajectory.

Erving, who has recently invested in the National Thoroughbred League, a ground-breaking horse racing league, expressed his perspective on the matter while discussing his involvement in the new venture. He believes that Clark's absence from the Olympics this year allows her to focus on her growth and development in the WNBA without the added pressure of international competition.

"I think that she's probably going to be a part of the next three Olympic teams, and three would be plenty because there's risk associated with being a part of this particular Olympic team," Erving said.

Erving emphasized the significant physical and tactical differences between the WNBA and international basketball, highlighting the challenges Clark could face in her first Olympics. He expressed concern that playing in such a demanding environment could lead to setbacks or hinder her development.

"The world plays a different game than the WNBA, much more physical, much more trying," Erving said. "You hit a wall at some point."

Erving believes that Clark's youth and experience level make it prudent to prioritize her development over an Olympic appearance this year. He emphasized the importance of allowing her to progress at her own pace and avoid potential burnout or setbacks early in her career.

"It's a first year for a young player – male or female, it don't matter – and it's always tough," Erving said. "So, slow your roll a little bit."

USA Basketball selection committee chair Jen Rizzotti has also defended the decision to leave Clark off the roster, asserting that it was a necessary move to prioritize the team's success.

"It would be irresponsible for us to talk about her in a way other than how she would impact the play of the team," Rizzotti said.

Clark has handled her omission with grace and maturity, expressing her support for the team and vowing to use the snub as motivation.

"I'm excited for the girls who are on the team," Clark said. "I'm going to be rooting them on. No disappointment. I think it just gives you something to work for."

Erving believes that Clark's absence from this year's Olympics will ultimately prove beneficial for her development. He is confident that she will be a key contributor to the US team in future Olympic Games, especially when the competition returns to Los Angeles in 2028.

"She might be upset about it, but I think in the long run, she'll be satisfied with the decisions that were made that she has no control over," Erving said.
