USA Basketball's decision to potentially leave Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark off the roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics has sparked controversy, with reports suggesting fan reaction to her limited playing time as a factor.
USA Basketball's expected decision to omit Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark from its roster for the 2024 Paris Olympics has prompted widespread criticism on social media and raised questions about the organization's evaluation process. According to a report by USA Today columnist Christine Brennan, one factor in Clark's exclusion is reportedly the concern over how her fans would react to her limited playing time in the Olympics.
Brennan cited two sources, described as "long-time U.S. basketball veterans with decades of experience in the women's game," who expressed concerns about the potential backlash from Clark's fans. The report suggests that some within the WNBA may harbor resentment towards Clark's popularity.
"If true, that would be an extraordinary admission of the existence of real tension that the old guard of women's basketball harbors for this multimillion-dollar sensation," Brennan wrote.
The decision has drawn fierce reactions on social media, with many expressing disappointment and questioning the reasoning behind Clark's omission. It has also fueled the narrative that not everyone in the WNBA is pleased with Clark's rising star status.
Clark, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, was invited to the national team's training camp in April but was unable to attend due to Iowa Hawkeyes' run to the NCAA Tournament final. Nine other Olympians, including five-time gold medalist Diana Taurasi, were invited to the camp. Clark's Indiana Fever teammate, Aliyah Boston, was also invited.
Clark has a proven track record of success with USA Basketball, having won three gold medals with junior national teams, including with the 2021 USA Women's U19 National Team.
The U.S. women's basketball team has an unparalleled legacy, having won every gold medal in the sport since the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
The decision to exclude Clark has sparked debate about the selection criteria employed by USA Basketball and raises questions about the organization's commitment to fostering the growth of young talent.
It remains to be seen whether Clark's omission will affect fan support for the U.S. women's basketball team in the 2024 Olympics. However, the controversy surrounding her potential snub has undoubtedly cast a shadow over the team's preparations for the upcoming Games.
