Florida's top financial officer, Jimmy Patronis, has blasted California Governor Gavin Newsom's economic policies, accusing him of "lying through his teeth" and presiding over a state in "free fall." Patronis argues that Newsom's proposed budget cuts, particularly to public safety, are fueling a vicious cycle that will further harm California's economy.

Florida's chief financial officer, Jimmy Patronis, has painted a grim picture of California's economic outlook under Governor Gavin Newsom's leadership, comparing it unfavorably to the Sunshine State's budget surpluses. According to Patronis, Newsom's proposed budget cuts, particularly to public safety, are a "disrespect" to taxpayers and will only exacerbate California's problems.

Newsom's proposed budget, released in May, includes reductions to law enforcement and prisons, totaling over $100 million. While Newsom's spokesperson initially denied any cuts to law enforcement, an official from the Department of Finance later acknowledged a 1.6% reduction in the overall budget for the state's Department of Justice.

Patronis argues that these cuts will fuel a "vicious cycle" of weaker public safety, leading to increased crime and business flight. He points to California's high crime rates, particularly in cities like San Francisco, as evidence of Newsom's failed policies.

Patronis attributes California's budget deficit, in part, to an exodus of businesses and residents due to high crime and soaring home prices. A Chapman University study found that California's green energy policies have also contributed to blue-collar business decline.

Furthermore, historically White middle-class families are leaving California due to environmental regulations that drive up housing costs, according to the study.

Despite the budget deficit, Newsom has proposed shifting money from the general fund to climate goals, particularly those related to "equity programs." Patronis criticizes this move, arguing that it further demonstrates Newsom's disregard for taxpayers' resources.

In contrast to California's financial struggles, Florida has enjoyed budget surpluses. Patronis credits Newsom's failures as governor, particularly in ensuring public safety, for Florida's economic success. He believes that a safe environment attracts businesses and residents, while California's defunding of law enforcement has had the opposite effect.

Patronis expressed concern about Newsom's future political ambitions, accusing him of being a skilled liar and lacking the leadership qualities necessary to manage the country's economy.

The California State Legislature is pushing against some of Newsom's proposed public safety cuts, particularly a $15 million decrease from the Department of Justice. The legislature has until June 15 to approve the budget, which would go into effect in July.

California's economic future hangs in the balance as Newsom's proposed budget cuts face resistance from the legislature. Patronis's harsh criticism of Newsom's policies serves as a reminder of the challenges facing the Golden State, as it grapples with a budget deficit, rising crime, and an exodus of businesses and residents.
