Five House Democrats have joined the chorus of lawmakers calling for President Biden to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race, citing his age and the need for "a new generation of Democratic leaders."

The clamor for President Biden to abandon his reelection bid intensified Friday as five more House Democrats added their voices to the growing chorus.

In a joint statement, Reps. Jared Huffman (D-Calif.), Marc Veasey (D-Texas), Chuy Garcia (D-Illinois), and Marc Pocan (D-Wis.) expressed their admiration and respect for Biden's service but urged him to step aside.

"Mr. President, with great admiration for you personally, sincere respect for your decades of public service and patriotic leadership, and deep appreciation for everything we have accomplished together during your presidency, it is now time for you to pass the torch to a new generation of Democratic leaders," the lawmakers wrote.

Their call comes amid growing concern among Democrats about Biden's age and fitness for a second term. The 80-year-old Biden would be the oldest person to serve as president if elected in 2024.

The lawmakers cited the "unique challenges" facing the nation and the need for "new perspectives and new visions" to address them. They emphasized the importance of "fresh energy" and "bold ideas" to inspire voters and unite the country.

Rep. Henry Cuellar (D-Texas), who represents a conservative-leaning district, recently caused a stir by publicly stating that Biden should not run for reelection. He has since clarified that he respects Biden's decision to run but believes it's "time for a new generation of leadership."

Other Democratic lawmakers, including Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), have also expressed concerns about Biden's age and the need for younger leaders to take the helm of the party.

The calls for Biden to step down have been met with mixed reactions within the Democratic Party. Some Democrats have defended Biden's record and urged him to seek reelection, while others have acknowledged the need to plan for the future and consider alternative candidates.

A recent poll by Civiqs found that 53% of Democratic voters believe it's time for a new generation of leadership, while 47% support Biden running for reelection.

The Democratic National Committee (DNC) has not yet weighed in on the issue, but former DNC Chairman Howard Dean said he believes it's too early to decide whether Biden should seek reelection.

As the 2024 presidential election draws closer, the pressure on Biden to make a decision will only intensify. The Democratic Party may face a crossroads if Biden chooses to run again, potentially setting the stage for a generational shift in leadership.
