Canada Defeats Venezuela, Eyes Revenge Against Argentina

Canada shocked Venezuela in a penalty shootout to advance to the semifinals of the World Cup, where they will face Argentina in a rematch of last year's final.
Canada pulled off a stunning upset on Saturday, defeating Venezuela 5-4 on penalties to reach the semifinals of the World Cup. The match was a tense and evenly contested affair, with both teams having chances to win in regulation and extra time.
Canada opened the scoring in the 25th minute through a superb solo effort from Alphonso Davies. The Bayern Munich star collected the ball on the left flank, dribbled past three Venezuelan defenders, and fired a low shot into the bottom corner.

Venezuela equalized in the 55th minute through a penalty kick from Josef Martínez. The Atlanta United striker was brought down in the area by Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan, and he calmly converted the spot-kick.
The match went to extra time, but neither team could find a winning goal. Canada had the best chance in the first half of extra time, but Jonathan David's shot from close range was saved by Venezuelan goalkeeper Wuilker Fariñez.
The second half of extra time was more evenly contested, with both teams creating chances. However, neither team could find the winning goal, and the match went to a penalty shootout.
Canada converted all five of their penalties, while Venezuela missed one. Borjan saved the decisive penalty from Ronald Hernández to send Canada through to the semifinals.
Canada will now face Argentina in the semifinals on Tuesday. Argentina defeated Australia 2-1 in their quarterfinal match.
The semifinal match between Canada and Argentina is a rematch of last year's World Cup final, which Argentina won 1-0. Canada will be looking for revenge, while Argentina will be looking to defend its title.
