Democratic strategist James Carville calls for President Biden to step down, arguing that 72% of Americans do not want him as their president. Carville suggests that the Democratic Party find a better candidate to avoid a victory by former President Trump.
Veteran Democratic strategist James Carville has joined the chorus of voices calling for President Biden to step down and allow another Democrat to take his place in the 2024 election. Carville's comments come after Biden's shaky performance in Thursday's presidential debate, which has sparked concerns about his ability to serve.
Carville told CNN host Jake Tapper on Monday that 72% of voters in America "want something different" and that the real question is "if the Democratic Party can't produce something different that 72% people want, then why do we exist? What are we here for? The country is clamoring for change!"

Carville said that everyone "saw what they saw" in Thursday's debate and that he does not take any pleasure in Biden's struggles. He noted that he himself will be 80 in October and that old age is something that cannot be fought.
When asked what the Democratic Party should do, Carville suggested "something different" and that some amount of upheaval would be unavoidable.

"I don't know, it'll be messy. It'll be a mess, and you know, that's what change is," he said. "But if the Democratic Party is so committed to the status quo, and so committed to sticking with something that three quarters of the country doesn't want, then we have to say, ‘Why do we exist?'"
Carville said that he likes President Biden but that the country wants something new. He derided people making excuses for Biden's poor debate performance and arguing that he had a bad night or a cold.

"President Biden is a great guy, and I'm a great guy, too. I don't have any business running campaigns anymore!" Carville said.
When asked about whether former Presidents Clinton and Obama were genuine in their support for Biden, Carville replied that they have a reverential view of what an ex-president should do.
"I don't think it's their job to do that," Carville said.
Carville's comments add to the growing pressure on Biden to step down. Many of his staunchest supporters among the media and the Democratic Party have called for him to step down in order to prevent a victory by former President Trump.
It remains to be seen whether Biden will heed these calls and step down. However, it is clear that his performance in the debate has raised serious doubts about his ability to serve.
