Article:
As the MLB regular season draws to a close, the race for postseason berths intensifies on both sides of the fence. The Wild Card races in the American and National Leagues have been captivating, with each remaining game carrying immense significance for multiple teams. While some teams, like the New York Yankees, are already celebrating division titles, others are still battling it out for a chance to extend their seasons.

For the Yankees, who currently hold the best record in the American League, the postseason berth they secured last week was a long-awaited triumph after they missed out in 2023. But the burning question on every Yankees fan's mind is whether this year's postseason appearance will finally translate into a World Series appearance.
Yankees legend CC Sabathia, who played a pivotal role in the team's 2009 World Series victory, believes that the key to their World Series aspirations lies in an often-overlooked area: the bullpen.

"Honestly, I think it would have to be the bullpen," Sabathia said. "Sure, without offense, you can't win games. But pitching becomes even more paramount in October, especially if your starter is either tapped out or can't seem to find it early in the game."
While the Yankees' offense, featuring Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, is undoubtedly formidable, Sabathia emphasizes the importance of a reliable bullpen that can hold the lead or pull the team back from a deficit in high-pressure situations.

The Yankees have struggled with bullpen woes this season, but they appear to have found a solution in Luke Weaver, who has taken over the closer role from Clay Holmes. Weaver has converted all four of his save opportunities since the beginning of the month and collected a win in an extra-inning game against the Kansas City Royals.
Tommy Kahnle and Ian Hamilton have also performed well in late-inning situations, while Jake Cousins is expected to return from the injured list in time for the playoffs. The Yankees may also consider using starters Marcus Stroman, Clarke Schmidt, Luis Gil, or Nestor Cortes as bullpen arms in the postseason.

Sabathia believes that a strong bullpen can be the difference-maker, especially in close games. He points to the Cleveland Guardians, another former team of his, as an example.
"On the flip side, Cleveland has the bullpen. If you get into a six-inning game with them, the game's over. It would be interesting to see how this playoff plays out because there's no real clear-cut winner," he said.
Emmanuel Clase, the Guardians' closer, has been dominant this season, posting a 0.63 ERA and leading the league in saves. His presence makes the Guardians a formidable opponent in the ninth inning.
The Houston Astros, Detroit Tigers, and Kansas City Royals currently hold the remaining playoff spots in the American League.
Shifting to the National League, Sabathia has a clear favorite for the pennant.
"I think the Padres are going to be in the World Series," he said.
Sabathia's prediction stems from the Padres' impressive pitching staff and bullpen. Led by Dylan Cease, Joe Musgrove, Yu Darvish, and Michael King, the Padres' rotation is one of the strongest in the league. Tanner Scott and Jason Adam, who were acquired at the trade deadline, have provided a significant boost to the bullpen.
The Padres also boast offensive firepower with Xander Bogaerts, Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado, Jurickson Profar, and NL Rookie of the Year candidate Jackson Merrill.
While the New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillies, and Milwaukee Brewers are all in contention for the NL pennant, Sabathia believes that the Padres have the best chance of reaching the World Series.
The Arizona Diamondbacks, the reigning NL champions, currently hold the final Wild Card spot.
As the MLB regular season concludes, the race for the World Series intensifies. CC Sabathia's insights provide valuable perspectives on the key factors that will determine the ultimate winners.
