The Boston Celtics extended their commanding lead in the NBA Finals to 3-0 after outlasting a valiant comeback attempt by the Dallas Mavericks in Game 3. Despite a 22-2 run by the Mavericks in the fourth quarter, the Celtics held on for a 106-99 victory, fueled by key performances from Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum.
The Boston Celtics survived a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Dallas Mavericks to secure a 106-99 victory in Game 3 of the NBA Finals, extending their series lead to a commanding 3-0 advantage.
Despite a sluggish start, Jaylen Brown exploded with 30 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists, proving to be an unstoppable force in the second half. Brown's pivotal jumper with just over a minute remaining extinguished the Mavericks' comeback hopes, while the Celtics' defense clamped down on Kyrie Irving to prevent any further damage.
Jayson Tatum remained a consistent threat, leading the Celtics with 31 points, 6 rebounds, and 5 assists. His shooting touch was on point, as he connected on 11 of his 26 field goal attempts and 4 of his 13 shots from beyond the arc.
The Mavericks, trailing by 21 early in the fourth quarter, displayed resilience and determination in their comeback attempt. P.J. Washington's offensive foul and a timely 3-pointer by Derrick White, however, halted Dallas' momentum.
Luka Doncic, Dallas' superstar, was forced to foul out for the first time in his playoff career, leaving the Mavericks without their key playmaker for the final four minutes of the game. Doncic had fought hard, amassing 27 points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists, but his absence proved costly.
Kyrie Irving played exceptionally well despite the loss, putting up 35 points and grabbing 3 rebounds. His 13-of-28 shooting performance showcased his ability to create opportunities, but it was not enough to overcome the Celtics' collective effort.
Dallas struggled from beyond the arc, connecting on only 9 of their 25 attempts compared to Boston's impressive 17 of 46. This disparity in three-point shooting played a significant role in the outcome of the game.
Boston played without Kristaps Porzingis, who was sidelined due to a rare foot injury suffered in Game 2. Despite his absence, the Celtics showcased their depth and rebounded from a 14-point deficit to secure the win.
The Celtics are now just one victory away from adding another NBA championship to their storied history. They boast 17 NBA championships, and their dominance in the Finals thus far suggests that they are poised to claim another title.
Game 4 is scheduled for Friday night in Dallas, where the Mavericks will make a desperate attempt to avoid a sweep and keep their championship hopes alive.
