NBA legend Charles Barkley has doubled down on his criticism of the alleged "petty nonsense" some WNBA players have displayed towards rookie Caitlin Clark.
NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley has remained steadfast in his assertion that certain WNBA veterans have been engaging in unbecoming behavior towards rookie Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark. Barkley, known for his outspoken nature, initially condemned the "pettiness" he perceived within the league towards Clark, a rising star in women's basketball.
Since Barkley's initial comments, tensions have seemingly escalated. Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese was accused of indirectly criticizing Clark on social media, an allegation her mother later refuted. More significantly, Sky guard Chennedy Carter became entangled in a physical altercation with Clark, resulting in a flagrant foul.
Barkley expressed astonishment at the treatment Clark has received, given her exceptional talent and potential. He lauded Clark for her dedication and professionalism, stating, "She doesn't say a word. She just shows up and does her job." Barkley believes Clark's exceptional abilities would naturally draw attention, but he was surprised by the nature of the reactions.
"I didn't think she was going to have to worry about all this petty nonsense that's going on," Barkley remarked. He expressed concern that the negative publicity generated by the situation could overshadow the positive impact Clark could have on the WNBA.
"This is not the old days where any publicity is good publicity," Barkley asserted. "It's really bad publicity for the WNBA, because we're not talking about basketball. When you're talking about all this pettiness and negativity, you're not talking about the game."
Barkley acknowledged that it's common for rookies to receive some level of scrutiny, but he believes the Sky players crossed a line. "They act like she didn't earn it. The woman just scored the most points ever by a man or a woman. 'She's only getting this job because she's White.' Is race a factor? Yes, race is a factor. But her résumé speaks for itself... They didn't prop her up just because she's White," Barkley emphasized.
Clark's games continue to draw significant attention, with her performances outscoring every other WNBA game. Her presence has also boosted attendance at her team's home games. Barkley remains confident that Clark has the potential to elevate the league, but he urges WNBA veterans to embrace her presence and support her growth.
