Former Knicks star Charles Oakley blasted reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid for his on-court behavior, suggesting that he would have "smacked" Embiid if they had played together.
Former New York Knicks star Charles Oakley has unleashed a scathing critique of reigning NBA MVP Joel Embiid, accusing him of unsporting behavior and questioning the league's response to his actions.
In an interview with Newsday, Oakley, a renowned enforcer during his playing days, expressed his dismay over Embiid's antics in the Knicks-Sixers playoff series.
"They've got to do something about it," Oakley said. "I wouldn't be shaking their hands before the game when they play, friends or no friends. I wouldn't shake Embiid's hand or anyone's hand. We are on a mission."
Oakley's criticism stems from several incidents involving Embiid that he deemed inappropriate. In Game 3 of the series, Embiid was called for a flagrant foul for grabbing Mitchell Robinson's legs while he was on the floor. Robinson subsequently suffered an ankle injury.
Embiid also struck Robinson in the groin later in the game. Oakley believes that such actions should not be tolerated.
"If he had done something like that [when I played], he would not have gotten away with it," Oakley stated. "David Robinson, when he played, he knew what he could get away with. They [bullies] pick a fight they think they are going to win."
Oakley, who was known for his physicality and toughness, insinuated that he would not have hesitated to confront Embiid physically if they had been on the court together.
"I probably would have smacked him," Oakley said of Embiid. "You can't let him send that kind of message."
Oakley's comments have resonated within the basketball community, sparking a debate about player conduct and the league's responsibility to maintain a safe and fair environment.
Embiid has faced criticism for his role in several other eyebrow-raising moments throughout the playoff series. His behavior has drawn comparisons to that of legendary provocateur Dennis Rodman, who was known for his eccentric and often controversial antics.
It remains to be seen how the NBA will respond to Oakley's outspoken criticism and whether it will prompt any changes in how players are held accountable for their actions on the court.
The Knicks currently hold a 2-1 series lead over the Sixers. Game 4 is scheduled to take place in Philadelphia on Sunday, with Embiid likely to be under intense scrutiny from both his opponents and the league.
