At approximately 2:23 p.m., the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) reported that "numerous" officers had been shot in the 5000 block of Galway Drive in the Shannon Park neighborhood. A SWAT team was immediately deployed to the scene, and residents were urged to stay inside their homes.

During a Monday evening press briefing, authorities revealed that the recipient of the warrant, 39-year-old Terry Clark Hughes, Jr., was the individual who initially opened fire. Hughes, who was wanted for firearm possession by a convicted felon and two counts of felony flee to elude, was killed in the shootout.

Police believe there may have been two shooters involved. Two persons of interest, a 17-year-old and a woman, were taken into custody for further questioning.

Three officers from the U.S. Marshals Task Force – one deputy and two task force officers – were among those killed. A fourth officer from the CMPD also succumbed to his injuries later Monday evening. In total, eight law enforcement officers were shot, with three CMPD officers and a U.S. Marshals Task Force officer still recovering from their wounds.
