After facing criticism for her aggressive play against Caitlin Clark, Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter received a standing ovation from her home crowd in her first game back. Carter has maintained her commitment to playing hard, but also expressed respect for her opponents off the court.
Chicago Sky guard Chennedy Carter has been in the spotlight since her hard foul on Caitlin Clark in a game against the Indiana Fever on Saturday. The play, which was upgraded to a flagrant, drew criticism from some quarters, but Carter has received support from her team and her home crowd.
In her first game back in Chicago since the incident, Carter received a standing ovation from the Sky crowd. "It felt good to know that SkyTown supports me," she said after the game. "The fans got loud and that ultimately just got me going."
Carter has maintained that she will continue to play hard, but she also expressed respect for her opponents off the court. "At the end of the day, it's all love outside of basketball," she said. "When we're in those four lines, it's smoke. After, it's all love."
Despite her aggressive play on the court, Carter also criticized Clark on social media over the weekend, calling her "nothing but a three-point shooter." Clark responded by saying she "wasn't expecting" Carter to hit her.
"It is what it is," Clark said. "It's a physical game. Go make the free throw and execute on offense, and I feel like that's kind of what we did."
The fallout from the incident has been a hot topic in the WNBA, with arguments on both sides of the fence. Some have criticized Carter for her hard foul, while others have defended her right to play hard.
Carter's coach, James Wade, said that he "respects" Carter's competitive nature. "She's a fierce competitor," he said. "She's not going to back down from anybody."
Carter's teammate, Kahleah Copper, also defended her. "She's a fighter," Copper said. "She's not going to let anybody push her around."
The incident has also raised questions about the physicality of the WNBA. Some have argued that the league needs to do more to protect its players from hard fouls.
However, Carter believes that the physicality of the WNBA is part of what makes it exciting. "I think it's important to be physical," she said. "It's a physical game. You have to be tough to play in this league."
The incident between Carter and Clark is a reminder that the WNBA is a competitive league where emotions can run high. However, it is also important to remember that the players are professionals who respect each other off the court.
