Kansas City Chiefs edged out the Baltimore Ravens on the game's final play after a review determined Isaiah Likely's toe was out of bounds, preventing the Ravens from forcing overtime.
In a thrilling season-opening clash at Arrowhead Stadium, the Kansas City Chiefs narrowly escaped a potential overtime scenario, defeating the Baltimore Ravens 27-20 thanks to a controversial toe call on the game's final play.
The game hung in the balance with the Ravens trailing 27-20 and needing a touchdown to force overtime. With just 10 seconds remaining, quarterback Lamar Jackson fired a strike to tight end Isaiah Likely, who appeared to secure the catch in the end zone.

However, after an extensive review, officials determined that Likely's toe had grazed the back line of the end zone, rendering the catch incomplete and effectively ending the game.
The Ravens' valiant comeback attempt had been thwarted, and the Chiefs emerged victorious, marking a disappointing start to the season for Baltimore.

While the toe call played a pivotal role in the outcome, the Chiefs' offense was buoyed by the exceptional performance of rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy.
Worthy, the NFL Scouting Combine's record holder in the 40-yard dash, showcased his blazing speed with two touchdowns on just three touches. His 21-yard scoring run on his first NFL carry exemplified the explosive plays the Chiefs are expected to create with his addition to the squad.

Worthy's contributions complement the brilliance of quarterback Patrick Mahomes, further cementing the Chiefs' offensive prowess.
Despite the late-game disappointment, the Ravens demonstrated glimpses of their offensive potential under new head coach John Harbaugh.
Running back Derrick Henry, acquired from the Tennessee Titans, found the end zone on a five-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. However, the Ravens' offense struggled to maintain momentum throughout the game.
Justin Tucker, Baltimore's reliable kicker, missed a 53-yard field goal attempt, while Jackson's interception late in the first half hindered the Ravens' scoring opportunities.
After a relatively even first half, the Chiefs seized control in the second half, thanks to Mahomes' leadership and the running of rookie running back Isiah Pacheco.
Mahomes orchestrated a six-play, 81-yard drive culminating in a Pacheco one-yard touchdown, extending the Chiefs' lead to 20-10.
Pacheco's physicality and ability to break tackles proved instrumental in the Chiefs' second-half surge.
Despite the Ravens' offensive struggles, tight end Isaiah Likely emerged as a bright spot, mimicking his standout performance from last season in Mark Andrews' absence.
Likely hauled in a 49-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter, momentarily sparking hope for a Ravens comeback. However, his final catch of the game, which would have forced overtime, ended in heartbreak.
The Ravens' season opener concluded in bitter disappointment, with the toe call leaving a sour taste in the mouths of players and fans alike. Baltimore will seek to regroup and correct its offensive deficiencies as they embark on their quest to reclaim their status as AFC contenders.
Meanwhile, the Chiefs, buoyed by Worthy's debut and Mahomes' continued brilliance, have taken an early lead in the AFC West race and will look to build upon their opening-week victory as the season unfolds.
