Kansas City Chiefs defensive end B.J. Thompson is in stable condition after going into cardiac arrest during a team meeting on Thursday morning.
The 25-year-old NFL player suffered a seizure during a special teams meeting at the Chiefs' training facility and went into cardiac arrest, according to the NFL Network.
Medical staff on site immediately attended to Thompson, and he was reportedly taken away in an ambulance.
Thompson, who was drafted by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2023 draft, is entering his second season with the team. He appeared in one game his rookie season against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 18, where he registered two tackles.
The Chiefs canceled Thursday's practice session and rescheduled it for the following day.
Friday will mark the team's final offseason training activity (OTA) before they return next week for mandatory minicamp.
According to ESPN, Thompson's cardiac arrest was witnessed by Chiefs chairman and CEO Clark Hunt, who was attending the meeting. Hunt is said to have been visibly shaken by the incident.
The Chiefs organization released a statement on Thompson's condition on Thursday afternoon.
"We are aware of the situation involving B.J. Thompson and are closely monitoring his condition," the statement read. "Our thoughts and prayers are with B.J. and his family at this time."
Thompson's family has not yet released a statement on his condition.
Cardiac arrest is a sudden loss of heart function, breathing, and consciousness. It is a medical emergency that requires immediate treatment.
The American Heart Association estimates that more than 350,000 people in the United States experience cardiac arrest each year. Only about 10% of those people survive.
The Chiefs' medical staff is likely to conduct further tests on Thompson to determine the cause of his cardiac arrest.
Thompson is a promising young player who has the potential to be a valuable contributor to the Chiefs' defense. The team will be hoping for a full and speedy recovery for him.
