As summer heats up, the Ada County Highway District (ACHD) is preparing for its annual chip seal maintenance program to improve the longevity, safety, and surface quality of roads throughout the county. Chip seal involves applying a layer of asphalt emulsion followed by a layer of crushed rock to create a durable and skid-resistant surface.

Chip Seal Season Approaches: ACHD Prepares for Annual Road Maintenance Cycle

The Ada County Highway District (ACHD) is gearing up for its annual chip seal maintenance program, which will commence in the coming weeks. Chip seal is a cost-effective and reliable method for preserving and improving the condition of asphalt roads, extending their lifespan and enhancing their safety and usability.

Chip seal involves applying a thin layer of asphalt emulsion to the road surface, followed by a layer of crushed rock or gravel. The asphalt emulsion acts as an adhesive, binding the rock particles together and creating a durable, skid-resistant surface.

ACHD's chip seal program typically runs from May to September, with crews working on various roads throughout Ada County. The exact schedule and locations are determined based on road conditions, traffic volume, and other factors.

Areas scheduled for chip seal treatment this year include:

* State Highway 16 from Cloverdale Road to State Highway 21

* State Highway 55 from the county line to New Market Road

* State Highway 78 from State Highway 16 to the county line

* Old Highway 30 from Victory Road to McDermott Road

* Ten Mile Road from Columbia Road to Main Street

ACHD will provide advance notice to residents and businesses in areas where chip seal is scheduled. Road closures or lane restrictions may be necessary during the application process, and motorists are advised to allow for extra travel time.

Once the chip seal application is complete, it takes approximately 24 hours for the surface to fully cure. During this time, motorists should drive slowly and avoid sharp turns to allow the emulsion to bond properly.

Chip seal provides numerous benefits, including:

* Improved road surface quality and longevity

* Enhanced skid resistance, reducing the risk of accidents

* Reduced noise and vibration from traffic

* Cost-effectiveness compared to complete road repavement

ACHD's chip seal program plays a vital role in maintaining the safety and integrity of Ada County's road network. By preserving and improving the condition of asphalt surfaces, chip seal helps to ensure that roads remain smooth, durable, and safe for motorists.

Motorists are encouraged to be patient and vigilant during the chip seal season. Allow for extra travel time, observe posted speed limits, and drive carefully to ensure the safety of themselves and construction crews.
