In 2002, Chris Pine's acting career was struggling, with his bank account overdrawn. However, everything changed when he booked a role in "The Princess Diaries 2," earning an earth-shattering $65,000 paycheck that transformed his life.
Before landing his breakout role in "The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement," Chris Pine's financial circumstances were far from stable. In 2002, he recounted that his bank account was overdrawn, and he was facing a bleak financial future. However, everything changed with a pivotal phone call while driving on the freeway.
Pine received a call from his agents informing him that he had been cast in the sequel to the popular "The Princess Diaries" film, starring Anne Hathaway and Julie Andrews. The news came as a life-altering moment for Pine, who had struggled with financial instability.
"I pulled over onto the side of the freeway and they said, ‘You’re getting paid $65,000,’ and it was like they had just told me I’d made $50 million," Pine recalled. "It was absolutely earth-shattering."
Despite his initial excitement, Pine later discovered that the actual amount he received after taxes was significantly lower than the initial $65,000 figure. Nonetheless, the paycheck remained a pivotal moment in his life.
"I had an overdraft in my bank account, it was like $400 over," Pine said. "I was gonna have to ask my parents for money. And I got that $65,000 and I just remembered distinctly knowing in that moment that my life had changed somehow."
While the money did not last long, it instilled in Pine a sense of confidence and optimism about his future. From that point forward, his career began to take off, leading to roles in major films such as "Star Trek" and "Wonder Woman."
Pine's story serves as a testament to the transformative power of a breakthrough role. While the financial reward may have been relatively modest, it was the psychological impact of the paycheck that truly changed his life.
To this day, Pine remains grateful for the opportunity that "The Princess Diaries 2" provided him. The film not only launched his acting career but also left an enduring mark on his outlook and determination.
Pine continues to act and has recently made his directorial debut with "Poolman," which premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival. Despite his success, he remains grounded and appreciative of the life-altering paycheck that set him on the path to stardom.
