Christian McCaffrey's costly fumble in Super Bowl LVIII continues to weigh heavily on the 49ers running back three months later. Running backs coach Bobby Turner acknowledges McCaffrey's personal attachment to the ball and the potential long-term impact of dwelling on the mistake.
Christian McCaffrey, widely regarded as one of the NFL's premier running backs, led the league in rushing yards in 2023 and played a pivotal role in the San Francisco 49ers' Super Bowl LVIII run. However, a costly fumble in the opening drive of the Super Bowl still lingers on McCaffrey's mind.
The Kansas City Chiefs went on to defeat the 49ers in overtime, claiming their second consecutive Vince Lombardi Trophy. Despite the time that has passed, the fumble continues to weigh heavily on McCaffrey.
49ers running backs coach Bobby Turner understands McCaffrey's desire for perfection but emphasizes the importance of letting go of mistakes. However, Turner recognizes that the fumble's significance extends beyond the game itself, potentially impacting McCaffrey's long-term performance.
"You have to be able to let it go," Turner said, "but it's one of those things you take personally because it's very important to him. The ball is everything. He is carrying this whole organization — his family, my family. He is carrying that football. It's heavy."
Turner frequently discusses ball security with the 49ers, emphasizing the importance of protecting "The Duke" and the pride McCaffrey takes in carrying it. Turner believes that McCaffrey's unwavering commitment to the game will help him overcome the lingering effects of the fumble.
"He was here every day last year from Day 1 and he was constantly in my office, or we were texting or talking to each other," Turner said.
McCaffrey has yet to participate in the 49ers' voluntary offseason program but is expected to be ready when he does arrive at team facilities. The 49ers open the 2024 regular season on Sept. 9 against the New York Jets, led by quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
While the fumble remains a sensitive topic for McCaffrey, the 49ers and Turner are confident in his ability to move forward and once again showcase his exceptional talent on the field.
