Months after revealing her skin cancer diagnosis, legendary supermodel Christie Brinkley has candidly shared the surprising moment she discovered the concerning spot on her face. During an appearance on the "Today" show, Brinkley recounted the unexpected turn of events that led to her diagnosis.

Accompanying her daughter to a dermatology appointment, Brinkley initially hesitated to mention a small spot on the side of her head. However, she decided to ask the doctor to examine it just before he concluded the appointment. To her surprise, the doctor immediately recognized the need for a biopsy, which subsequently confirmed the diagnosis of basal cell carcinoma.

Recalling the experience, Brinkley expressed gratitude for catching the cancer early. She emphasized the importance of regular skin checkups and sun protection to prevent or detect skin cancer at its earliest stages.

"The good news for me is we caught the basal cell carcinoma early," Brinkley wrote in an Instagram post announcing her diagnosis. "And I had great doctors that removed the cancer and stitched me up to perfection like an haute couture Dior."

Sharing photos of her surgery scars, Brinkley vowed to make lifestyle changes following her diagnosis. She encouraged her followers to prioritize sun protection by wearing SPF 30, reapplying as needed, and covering up with long sleeves and wide-brim hats.

"The good news for you is that all of this can be avoided by being diligent with your sun protection!" she wrote. "I got serious a bit late so now for this ole mermaid/gardener, I'll be slathering on my SPF 30, reapplying as needed, wearing long sleeves and a wide brim hat. And doing regular total body checkups...that is a MUST!"
