C.J. Stroud's Postgame Advice to Caleb Williams: "Stop Taking Those Hits
As Stroud and Williams exchanged handshakes, Stroud's words of encouragement were a mystery at the time. However, NFL Films released a social media post on Tuesday, revealing the conversation captured on Stroud's microphone.
"Good job out there, bro," Stroud began. "Hey, stop taking those hits."
Williams acknowledged the advice, nodding along. As he turned to walk away, Stroud pulled him back, emphasizing the importance of playing safely.
"Hey, learn — look, come here," Stroud said. "Learn from those mistakes. And everything that you got, bro, is in you already, bro. You're going to be a hell of a player in this league."
Williams expressed his gratitude, saying, "I appreciate it," before they parted ways.
Williams had a challenging game against the formidable Houston defense, enduring seven sacks and 36 pressures. While he gained 44 rushing yards, he wisely slid at the end of several runs to minimize contact.
Despite the tough outing, Williams' potential remains undeniable. Through two starts, he has completed 56.1% of his passes, an improvement from his Week 1 performance. However, he has yet to throw a touchdown and has already thrown two interceptions.
Williams can undoubtedly learn from Stroud, who faced adversity early in his rookie year. Stroud lost his first two starts and was sacked 11 times in those games. However, he turned things around, throwing for 4,108 yards, 23 touchdowns, and five interceptions with a 100.8 passer rating.
The Texans thrived with Stroud at the helm, posting a 10-7 record and winning a playoff game. Williams and the Bears aspire to achieve similar success, but they must address their weaknesses to reach their potential.
As Williams continues his NFL journey, he can look to Stroud as an example of a quarterback who overcame challenges and emerged as a rising star. Stroud's advice to "stop taking those hits" is not only a reminder of self-preservation but also a testament to the camaraderie and mentorship that exists within the NFL.
