Clarence Birdseye, a Brooklyn native born in 1886, lived an extraordinary life that defied expectations. Despite dropping out of college, his adventurous spirit propelled him to explore remote regions of the world, including the frigid coast of Newfoundland and the steamy sugarcane plantations of South America.
Birdseye possessed an insatiable curiosity and a voracious appetite for adventure. He trapped and consumed a wide variety of animals, demonstrating his willingness to adapt to diverse environments. His keen taste buds and culinary experiments would ultimately shape the way Americans shop and eat.

The appeal of frozen foods became evident during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, when consumers stockpiled long-lasting sustenance for the unknown days ahead. The American Frozen Food Institute reported a 21% increase in retail sales in 2020 compared to 2019, and the industry continues to thrive today with sales reaching $74 billion in 2023.

He patented the reflecting lamps commonly used on job sites today and helped the federal government combat Rocky Mountain spotted fever by showing that it was transmitted to humans through animals. In total, Birdseye developed some 300 patents and inventions in his lifetime. However, none had more impact on the nation than his work in frozen food.
