College football analyst Booger McFarland believes Clemson's recent struggles stem from a lack of offensive creativity and a reluctance to utilize the transfer portal.
The Clemson Tigers suffered a resounding 34-3 defeat at the hands of the Georgia Bulldogs in their season opener, sparking questions about the direction of the program under head coach Dabo Swiney. ESPN college football analyst Booger McFarland has weighed in on what he believes has contributed to Clemson's recent shortcomings.
McFarland believes Clemson's offensive strategy has become stale and predictable, lacking the creativity necessary to keep opponents guessing. "It's been the same stale offense for four or five years," he said. "If you're a Clemson fan, you have to ask yourself, when are we going to change?"
Clemson's Lack of Creativity and Portal Strategy Under Scrutiny
The Tigers' offensive struggles were evident in their season opener, as they managed just 188 total yards of offense against Georgia. McFarland attributed this underwhelming performance to a lack of innovation in play calling. "They're not doing anything different," he said. "They're just running the same old plays, and it's not working."
McFarland also criticized Swiney's approach to the transfer portal, suggesting that the coach's reluctance to acquire players from other programs has hindered the Tigers' roster-building efforts. "Dabo chooses not to [use the portal], therefore, you're going to have those lulls in the program," McFarland said. "And I'm afraid, right now, they have a little bit of a lull."

Swiney acknowledged the criticism surrounding his transfer portal strategy but remained unapologetic. "People are going to say whatever they want to say," he said. "It doesn't matter what I say. People are going to say whatever they're going to say. And when you lose like this, they've got every right to say whatever they want to say. So, say whatever you want to say, write whatever you want to write. That comes with it. That's just part of it."
Despite the disappointing loss to Georgia, Swiney and the Tigers have an opportunity to get back on track on September 7 when they host Appalachian State. The game will be a crucial test for both the Clemson offense and their ability to address the concerns raised by McFarland and other analysts.
