During a segment discussing the recent attempted assassination of Justice Brett Kavanaugh, co-hosts of the talk show "The View" mistakenly interpreted author John Grisham's comments as referring to the actual assassination of Supreme Court justices.
During a recent segment on the attempted assassination of Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, co-hosts of the talk show "The View" found themselves in a precarious position after misunderstanding author John Grisham's comments. Grisham, who was discussing a past novel featuring the murder of two fictional Supreme Court justices, intended to convey his plans for a new book with a similar premise. However, the co-hosts initially interpreted his words as an alarming suggestion of actual violence.
The misunderstanding occurred when Grisham mentioned his previous novel, "The Testament," in which he explored the assassination of two Supreme Court justices. In the context of discussing the current climate surrounding the Court, Grisham stated that he was contemplating writing another novel along the same lines.
"I'm thinking about doing another one of those," Grisham said, referring to the potential assassination scenario. "But I'm not going to tell you who the justices are."
The co-hosts, unaware of Grisham's intentions, reacted with alarm and rushed to clarify that he was not advocating for violence against the justices.
"Well, I think that's a little bit extreme," co-host Joy Behar interjected. "I think you need to be careful about saying things like that."
Grisham quickly realized the misinterpretation and attempted to rectify the situation.
"No, no, no," he emphasized. "I'm not saying I would do it. I'm saying I might write a book about it."
Despite Grisham's clarification, the co-hosts remained visibly shaken by his comments and repeatedly pressed him to ensure that he was not suggesting actual violence.
"I think you need to be very careful about what you say," co-host Sunny Hostin stated. "People are very sensitive about this issue right now."
Grisham acknowledged their concerns and reassured them that he had no intention of encouraging violence.
"I understand," he said. "I just wanted to talk about the idea of writing a book like that. I'm not advocating for anything."
The segment ended with the co-hosts reiterating their stance against violence and emphasizing the importance of responsible speech.
The incident highlights the sensitivity and caution that must be exercised when discussing topics related to violence and the Supreme Court. Grisham's attempt to explore a fictional scenario was met with initial misinterpretation, underscoring the need for clear communication and careful consideration of context.
