The U.S. Coast Guard is still actively investigating the factors leading to the deaths of five people in the OceanGate Titan submersible implosion last year, despite expectations of a year-long completion. The investigation has been extended due to the need for salvage missions, forensic testing, and international cooperation.

Nearly a year after the tragic implosion of the OceanGate Titan submersible, which claimed the lives of five individuals, the U.S. Coast Guard has provided an update on its ongoing investigation.

The Coast Guard confirmed that the investigation is still underway, although it will take longer than initially anticipated. The need to conduct two salvage missions to retrieve vital evidence, as well as extensive forensic testing, has contributed to the delay.

The five victims of the incident, which occurred on June 18, 2023, included U.K. billionaire Hamish Harding, OceanGate CEO Stockton Rush, father-son pair Shahzada Dawood and Suleman Dawood, and French mariner Paul-Henry Nargeolet. They were onboard the submersible during its descent to view the Titanic at a depth of 12,500 feet.

According to Jason Neubauer, Chair of the Coast Guard's Marine Board Investigation (MBI), the investigation into the implosion is a complex undertaking. He emphasized the importance of international and inter-agency cooperation in recovering, preserving, and examining evidence from the remote offshore location and extreme depth.

The Coast Guard originally anticipated completing the investigation within a year, but the aforementioned factors have extended the timeline. Neubauer expressed gratitude for the cooperation and support received from international partners and other agencies.

The MBI plans to hold a public hearing session by the end of the year to discuss the investigation findings. The Coast Guard extended its deepest condolences to the families and friends of the victims on the approaching one-year anniversary of the incident.

After the Titan lost contact with its mothership, a week-long search was conducted to locate the vessel. Investigators initially held hope that the passengers might still be alive, trapped with limited oxygen. However, the debris from the submarine was discovered near the wreckage of the Titanic four days later and was subsequently brought to the surface for examination.

The Coast Guard confirmed that the men succumbed to a "catastrophic implosion" of the vessel, and the Navy had detected an underwater noise consistent with an implosion, coinciding with the loss of contact. Presumed human remains were recovered from the wreckage during the subsequent investigation.

The U.S. Coast Guard remains committed to understanding the factors that led to this tragedy and preventing similar occurrences in the future through its thorough investigation.
