Late Night host Stephen Colbert takes aim at President Biden's attempt to secure the border, suggesting a "gluten-free wall" and "pro-choice barbed wire" to appease progressive Democrats.
Late Night host Stephen Colbert has poked fun at President Biden's efforts to tighten border security, proposing a "gluten-free" wall and "pro-choice barbed wire" to appease progressive Democrats.
Colbert's mockery stems from the White House's recently announced executive actions aimed at curbing illegal immigration at the southern border. The move has sparked backlash from progressive Democrats within the party.
In a humorous attempt to address the challenge of persuading progressives to support increased border security, Colbert recommended a "gluten-free" wall and "pro-choice barbed wire."
"So, we're gonna seal the border, folks, but the wall is going to be gluten-free, and the barbed wire will be pro-choice," Colbert quipped. "It's not a border wall. It's a bord-Her wall."
Colbert acknowledged the difficulty Biden faces in pitching a tougher border policy to progressive Democrats, observing that "being an anti-immigration liberal" is a delicate balancing act.
"This order is not playing great with progressives," Colbert said, citing Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's criticism of the policy. In February, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted: "Seeking asylum is a legal right of all people. Doing Trump impressions isn't how we beat Trump."
Colbert couldn't resist mocking himself for his frequent Trump impressions, acknowledging that Ocasio-Cortez has a point.
"'Nope. Doing Trump impressions — she's right, folks, doing Trump impressions is how ya fill 13 minutes of monologue every night,'" Colbert said, imitating Trump's response to Ocasio-Cortez.
"And here's the thing. No, listen up. Folks, listen, it's true. I tell you, he said he wouldn't do 'em anymore, but then lyin' Stephen Colbert, no-talent guy, broke his promise to himself, really. How does he look himself in the mirror at night? Sad!'" Colbert continued, impersonating Trump.
The policy shift comes amid heightened political tensions ahead of the November election, with President Biden facing mounting pressure to address the issue of border security. The new measures, including temporary border closures for migrants, have been met with mixed reactions.
Progressives argue that the policy is too restrictive and fails to address the root causes of illegal immigration. Conservatives, on the other hand, applaud the move as a necessary step to stem the flow of unauthorized crossings.
As the debate over border security continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how Biden will navigate the political landscape and balance the demands of both progressives and conservatives.
