A study from Arizona State University highlights that massive changes to the college football landscape in 2022-2023 could lead to a substantial increase in carbon emissions due to enhanced travel distances for some schools.
A study conducted by Arizona State University has shed light on the potential environmental repercussions of the recent realignment in college football. The research points to a significant increase in carbon emissions, particularly for the ACC and Big Ten conferences.
The 2022 and 2023 college football seasons witnessed significant shifts as Oregon, USC, UCLA, and Washington left the Pac-12 to join the Big Ten. Cal and Stanford also departed from the Pac-12 for the ACC, while the Big 12 welcomed Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado, and Utah.
The Arizona State study analyzed the impact of these changes on the Power Five conferences and found that, with the exception of the SEC, all other conferences will experience a notable surge in emissions. According to the study, the ACC and Big Ten will double their emissions per game.
Professor Ross Maciejewski, who supervised the study, emphasized the unprecedented scale of the realignment in terms of distances. He pointed out that Cal's football schedule for the 2024 season includes away games at Florida State, Pittsburgh, Wake Forest, and SMU, while hosting East Coast schools such as Syracuse, N.C. State, and Miami.
The study acknowledges the benefits of conference realignment but stresses the need for a more balanced approach that considers both the advantages and environmental implications. It suggests evaluating schools' geographical proximity and competitive skill levels when making realignment decisions.
By aligning schools that are closer to each other geographically and in terms of performance, it may be possible to reduce the carbon footprint associated with travel while preserving the excitement of games.
Additionally, the study advocates for a "strategic approach" to the scheduling process, taking carbon emissions into account. It encourages conferences to explore creative solutions, such as reducing the number of conference games that require long-distance travel.
The study's findings underline the growing need to prioritize sustainability in the world of college athletics. As the sport continues to evolve, it becomes increasingly important to consider the environmental impacts of major decisions and explore ways to mitigate them.
By striking an optimal balance between competitive integrity and environmental sustainability, college football can set an example for other sports and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future.
