College Football Week 5 Preview: Top Matchups to Watch This Weekend

Week 5 of the college football season brings a slew of exciting matchups, including a rematch of last year's SEC championship between Georgia and Alabama, a Big 12 showdown between Oklahoma State and Kansas State, and a meeting in the Big Ten between Illinois and Penn State.

Michigan is expected to lean heavily on its running game, led by Kalel Mullings, who had a breakout performance last week. Minnesota's passing defense is strong, but its run defense is vulnerable, making it challenging to contain the Wolverines' ground attack.

Both teams are seeking to remain competitive in the Big 12 despite recent losses. Kansas State's quarterback Avery Johnson will face a tough test against Oklahoma State's weak defense. Oklahoma State's offense, on the other hand, has struggled with veteran quarterback Alan Bowman and running back Ollie Gordon II underperforming.

Notre Dame needs wins to revive its College Football Playoff hopes. Its top scoring offense will face a stout Notre Dame defense that has allowed only 9.8 points per game. Cardinals quarterback Tyler Shough has been impressive with eight passing touchdowns and zero interceptions. Notre Dame's Riley Leonard had a strong performance against Miami (Ohio), showcasing his passing and rushing abilities.

This highly anticipated rematch of last year's SEC championship pits Alabama's explosive offense against Georgia's dominant defense. Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe has been more mobile under new coach Kalen DeBoer, but Georgia's defense will need to apply early pressure and limit big plays. Georgia quarterback Carson Beck will need to establish a rhythm early to give his team a chance.

Illinois has already upset two ranked teams, including Michigan State, and will look to do the same against Penn State. The Illini are not afraid of hostile environments, even the iconic "White Out" atmosphere at Beaver Stadium. Penn State, meanwhile, is searching for its first quality win. A victory this weekend would leave only two top 25 teams remaining on their schedule.
