Colombia advanced to the Copa América quarterfinals as the winner of Group D, beating out Brazil by two points with its 1-1 draw at Levi's Stadium on Tuesday. Costa Rica was eliminated after finishing third in Group D.
Colombia secured the top spot in Group D of the Copa América with a 1-1 draw against Brazil in the final round of group play on Tuesday. The result pushed Colombia to seven points, two ahead of Brazil, and set up a quarterfinal clash with Panama.
The match started with Brazil on the front foot, looking to bounce back from its loss to Ecuador in the previous match. The Brazilians controlled possession and created several scoring chances, but Colombia's defense held strong.
In the 39th minute, Colombia stunned Brazil when Juan Cuadrado found Luis Diaz with a perfect cross into the box. Diaz headed the ball past Ederson to give Colombia a 1-0 lead.
Brazil responded well to going behind and equalized just five minutes later. Raphinha curled a free kick over the wall and into the top corner of the net, leaving Ospina with no chance.
The second half was a more even affair, with both teams having chances to win the game. However, neither side could find the decisive goal, and the match ended in a 1-1 draw.
With the draw, Colombia extended its unbeaten streak to 26 matches, one shy of tying the team record set from 1992 to 1994. It also marked the second time in the last three Copa América tournaments that Colombia has won its group.
Costa Rica, meanwhile, was eliminated from the tournament after finishing third in Group D. The Ticos have now been eliminated in the group stage in their last three Copa América appearances.
* Paraguay finished the tournament with a 0-3 record, having lost all three of its matches. This is the second time in the last eight Copa América tournaments that Paraguay has been eliminated in the group stage.
* Francisco Calvo and Josimar Alcócer scored for Costa Rica in its 2-1 victory over Paraguay. Calvo's goal was his 12th for Costa Rica, while Alcócer scored his second goal for the national team.
* Néstor Lorenzo remains unbeaten as Colombia's head coach, now 17-0-6 since taking over in June of 2022.
* Brazil is now 12-2-5 in their last 19 matches played on U.S. soil. Raphinha's goal is the first direct free kick goal of the tournament.
