Marjorie Harris, co-owner of the Washington Commanders, has expressed her thoughts on the ongoing debate surrounding the team's nickname. Speaking at a recent foundation event, Harris acknowledged the diverse range of opinions on the issue but shared her own positive impressions of the "Commanders" name.
"As you would imagine, everybody has an opinion about the name – some good, some bad, some in the middle," Harris said. "And I think that we have a lot of work to do, and that name issue is going to be on the side for now until we can get things going."
Harris went on to state that she had been using the Commanders name consistently while out in the community and found that it had grown on her. "Quite frankly, I had a whole day in the community and I kept referring to the team as the Commanders, and you know what, it sounds pretty good to me," she said. "So, for now, it's the Commanders."
The Commanders' adoption of their current nickname came after a lengthy process of deliberation following the team's decision to move on from the "Washington Football Team" moniker. The previous name, "Washington Redskins," had been the subject of controversy and criticism for its perceived racial insensitivity.
However, the Commanders' new nickname has also faced challenges. In September 2023, the Native American Guardians Association (NAGA) filed a lawsuit against the team over the use of the name. NAGA argued that the term "Commanders" perpetuates harmful stereotypes about Native Americans.
Additionally, some fans and observers have expressed disappointment with the Commanders name, arguing that it lacks the same historical significance and emotional resonance as the "Redskins" moniker. A recent poll conducted by The Washington Post found that only 16% of fans think the team should keep the Commanders nickname.
Despite these challenges, Marjorie Harris remains optimistic about the team's future under its new name. She emphasized the importance of building a strong connection with the community and focusing on the team's performance on the field.
"I think we have a great team and I think we're going to do great things," Harris said. "And I hope that everybody will get behind us and support us – no matter what the name is."
The Commanders' upcoming season will be their third under the new nickname. The team is hoping to build on its recent success, which includes a division championship and a playoff appearance in 2022. The Commanders will open their 2023 season on September 10th against the Carolina Panthers.
