In a major blow to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Conservative MP Natalie Elphicke has defected to the opposition Labour Party, citing concerns over the government's handling of immigration and the National Health Service.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak faced further turmoil on Wednesday as another Conservative lawmaker, Natalie Elphicke, crossed the floor of Parliament to join the opposition Labour Party. This stunning move comes ahead of a looming general election, adding to the pressure on Sunak's beleaguered government.

Elphicke, who represents the constituency of Dover, delivered a scathing indictment of the Conservative government led by Sunak. "We need to move on from the broken promises of Rishi Sunak’s tired and chaotic government," she declared. She accused the Conservatives of becoming "a byword for incompetence and division."

Elphicke's defection follows that of Dan Poulter, another Conservative MP who quit in anger over the government's handling of the National Health Service. Notably, Elphicke is considered to be on the right of the Conservative Party and has been a vocal critic of Labour in the past. However, she has recently expressed growing disapproval of the government's approach to immigration, particularly the controversial plan to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.

"From small boats to biosecurity, Rishi Sunak’s government is failing to keep our borders safe and secure," Elphicke asserted.

Sunak has made reducing the number of asylum seekers arriving in the UK in small boats a key issue ahead of the election. However, over 8,000 have already made the dangerous crossing this year.

Labour leader Keir Starmer welcomed Elphicke to the Labour benches, emphasizing that she brings experience and a strong voice on immigration. He also reiterated his call for Sunak to call a general election now, arguing that the Conservatives cannot carry on when even a lawmaker at the forefront of the immigration crisis says Sunak "cannot be trusted with our borders."

Labour has made significant gains in recent local elections, winning key mayoral races and areas that voted for Brexit in 2016. Elphicke's defection may help Labour deflect Conservative attacks that it may seek to reverse Brexit. In her statement, she affirmed that Labour "has accepted Brexit and its economic policies."

Sunak's government has been plagued by scandals and missteps, including the recent resignation of party chairman Nadhim Zahawi over tax irregularities. The defection of another Conservative lawmaker will further damage Sunak's credibility and raise questions about his ability to lead the party into the next election.

The date of the general election is in the hands of the prime minister. Sunak has repeatedly said that his "working assumption" is that it would take place in the second half of 2024. However, the growing turmoil within the Conservative Party could force him to reconsider his timetable.
