Embattled Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard defied a trustees' vote to postpone a board meeting, prompting accusations of excessive spending, corruption, and retaliation.
Embroiled in scandal and facing an ongoing federal investigation, Dolton Mayor Tiffany Henyard ruffled feathers once again by proceeding with a board meeting Tuesday despite its postponement by trustees. Henyard's actions have fueled anger and frustration among residents, who have long voiced concerns about her lavish spending and alleged misdeeds.
The Chicago Tribune editorial board has urged voters to hold Henyard accountable for her extravagant spending as she seeks reelection next year. The board highlighted her taxpayer-funded trips and lavish lifestyle, contrasting it with the struggles faced by Dolton residents, a fifth of whom live in poverty.

Henyard and her entourage have racked up tens of thousands of dollars in charges for trips to major cities, including a $9,300 stay at the Four Seasons in Atlanta. The editorial board questioned the necessity of such frequent travel and the high cost to taxpayers.
Former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot, tasked with leading a special investigation into Henyard, has revealed questionable purchases made on the village credit card, including over $33,000 on Amazon. Henyard has also drawn criticism for using a stylist and paying an ally $7,650 despite her town's median income of only $24,000.

Allegations of sexual assault and retaliation have further tarnished Henyard's reputation. Former colleagues have publicly denounced her extravagant spending and alleged misconduct.
Dolton's financial troubles have also come under scrutiny. The Illinois State Comptroller Office has withheld funds over financial record discrepancies. Henyard's decision to reappoint a fired deputy police chief indicted on bankruptcy fraud charges has raised concerns.

The FBI is actively investigating allegations of financial misdeeds in Dolton. The accusations have put pressure on the town of over 20,000 residents. Henyard's authoritarian style has earned her the nickname "dictator" among some locals.
The next mayoral election in Dolton is scheduled for April 2025, with several trustees running against Henyard under the slogan "Clean House 2025." Dolton Trustee Kiana Belcher has accused the mayor of lying, stealing, and locking out the community.
