Cornell University President Martha E. Pollack announced her retirement amid ongoing anti-Israel protests on campus and nationwide, including incidents of threats, harassment, and discriminatory rhetoric. The Board of Trustees has appointed Provost Michael I. Kotlikoff as interim president, while Pollack will assume the title of president emerita for two years.
Ithaca, New York - Cornell University President Martha E. Pollack announced her retirement on Thursday, June 30, amidst ongoing anti-Israel protests on campus. This announcement comes as the university grapples with incidents of antisemitism and discriminatory rhetoric against Jewish students, sparking widespread concern and controversy.
The decision to retire was revealed in a statement issued by Pollack, who expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to serve as Cornell's president for the past seven years. She highlighted her accomplishments during her tenure, including establishing the Cornell Jeb E. Brooks School of Public Policy, expanding educational accessibility and affordability, and launching the university's first-ever theme year on free expression and inquiry.
Pollack also acknowledged the challenges faced by Cornell and other universities during her presidency, particularly the global pandemic and the recent terrorist attacks in Israel and subsequent conflict in Gaza. These events ignited a wave of anti-Israel sentiment and protests on college campuses nationwide, impacting students, faculty, and the broader university community.
William A. Jacobson, a clinical professor at Cornell Law School, believes that Pollack's retirement may be linked to the university's response to the escalating antisemitism on campus. He指出 the recent incidents of threats made against Jewish students and anti-Israel rhetoric at Cornell, which have drawn national attention and Congressional inquiry.
Jacobson has been a vocal critic of Cornell's aggressive DEI initiatives, which he believes have contributed to the hostile environment for Jewish students and fostered a climate of division and intolerance on campus. He called on the Board of Trustees to re-evaluate these initiatives and focus on promoting inclusivity and respect for all identities.
In addition to the anti-Israel protests, Cornell has also faced criticism for its handling of DEI-related matters. In January 2023, Cornell emeritus trustee Jon A. Lindseth urged the university to abandon its "misguided commitment" to DEI, claiming it has led to "disgrace" rather than "excellence." He cited specific examples of initiatives that he believes have alienated donors and undermined the university's educational mission.
In her retirement announcement, Pollack emphasized the importance of seeking out diverse perspectives and engaging in respectful dialogue, even with those holding opposing views. She expressed optimism that Cornell will continue to thrive and overcome the current challenges, highlighting the university's resilience over its 159-year history.
The Board of Trustees has appointed Provost Michael I. Kotlikoff as interim president, starting July 1. Kotlikoff will oversee Cornell's operations during the transition period while the university conducts a search for the 15th president. Pollack will assume the title of president emerita for two years, providing guidance and support to the new administration.
The university has received numerous expressions of support and gratitude for Pollack's leadership during her presidency. However, the ongoing anti-Israel protests and DEI-related controversies have raised questions about Cornell's ability to provide a safe and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their backgrounds or beliefs.
