Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins shares his journey of recovery and rehabilitation after suffering a season-ending Achilles tear, drawing inspiration from fellow NFL quarterback Aaron Rodgers and seeking guidance from athletes who have successfully returned from similar injuries.

Quarterback Kirk Cousins has faced numerous challenges throughout his NFL career, but none as daunting as the torn Achilles he sustained in Week 8 of the 2023 season. The injury abruptly ended his campaign and forced him to undergo surgery to repair the ligament.

"It's uncharted territory for me," Cousins told Fox News Digital after the offseason workout period ended with his new team, the Atlanta Falcons. Facing an uncertain future, Cousins sought guidance from others who had undergone similar setbacks.

Enter Aaron Rodgers, the New York Jets quarterback who also tore his Achilles four plays into his first season with the team. Cousins reached out to Rodgers before surgery, seeking insights into the recovery process. Rodgers served as a "benchmark" for Cousins, providing him with a realistic timeline for his own recovery.

Beyond Rodgers, Cousins connected with individuals who had successfully returned from Achilles tears, including former quarterbacks and NBA players. Their experiences offered him encouragement and demonstrated that success after such an injury is possible.

Cousins' recovery timeline was estimated to take nine months, with a gradual progression back to the field. He surpassed expectations by participating in off-season team activities (OTAs) with a modified practice schedule.

"I wasn't going a million miles an hour, but I was able to get those reps and I felt like that really helped me get to know my teammates, get to know the system, get comfortable," Cousins said.

The recovery process has taught Cousins the importance of balancing progression with avoiding setbacks. Pushing too hard can result in setbacks, while holding back can hinder rehabilitation. Striking the right balance is crucial for a successful recovery.

"So, it's been this dance of trying to figure out am I pushing it enough where I'm asking my body to take that next step in the healing process? But am I pushing too hard, also, and trying to go up against that line and not cross it?" Cousins said.

Despite the challenges, Cousins remains optimistic about his future. The Falcons signed him to a four-year, $180 million contract with $100 million guaranteed. Together, they aim to lead the team back to the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

Cousins hopes to become a source of inspiration for others who face similar injuries. He aims to join the ranks of athletes who have successfully returned from Achilles tears and continue his career as a top quarterback in the NFL.

"I'm hoping to be able to add my name to that list," Cousins said with a grin.
