The sting operation took place over three days, from Thursday to Sunday, during Comic-Con International, a popular comic book and pop culture event that attracts over 100,000 fans to San Diego each year.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced the arrests on Wednesday, stating, "Unfortunately, sex traffickers capitalize on large-scale events such as Comic-Con to exploit their victims for profit."

"These arrests send a clear message to potential offenders that their criminal behavior will not be tolerated."

The arrests come amid concerns raised by California Democrats about an anti-human trafficking bill that targets people who purchase sex with minors.

Some Democrats have objected to aspects of the bill, arguing that it could lead to the criminalization of sex work and potentially harm vulnerable populations.

Despite these concerns, law enforcement officials have emphasized their commitment to combating human trafficking and protecting vulnerable individuals.

"Working together, teams identified and arrested more than a dozen individuals participating in these illegal acts in our City over the weekend," said San Diego Police Chief Scott Wahl. "These results show our collective dedication to combating human trafficking and holding criminals accountable are working."

San Diego Comic Convention released a statement expressing their concern about the human trafficking sting operation and emphasizing their commitment to working with law enforcement.

"Obviously, we find this very disturbing and, while we were not made aware of this operation, it is our understanding that the arrests were made outside of the event," the statement read. "We work closely with a variety of law enforcement entities throughout the year and stand ready to assist in any way we can."

The crackdown on human trafficking at Comic-Con International highlights the ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat this heinous crime and protect vulnerable populations.
