A cruise ship arriving in New York City on Saturday carried a gruesome discovery—a 44-foot dead sei whale caught on its bow, while a separate Carnival cruise ship embarked on a more heartwarming mission, rescuing 27 Cuban nationals adrift at sea.
A chilling sight met onlookers in New York City on Saturday as the MSC Meraviglia docked at the Port of Brooklyn with a massive whale lying dead across its bow. The 44-foot endangered sei whale's presence on the cruise ship raised questions and concerns about the incident that led to its demise.
The MSC Cruises spokesperson, Sidney Sterling, expressed deep regret over the discovery, which was reported to relevant authorities. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) fisheries spokesperson Andrea Gomez confirmed the whale as an endangered sei whale, typically found in deeper waters far from the coastline.
Gomez noted that NOAA's Office of Law Enforcement was investigating the incident and that the whale had been relocated to Sandy Hook, New Jersey, for further examination. Scientists examined the whale's body, finding broken bones in its right flipper and tissue trauma along its right shoulder blade.
The examination aimed to determine whether the cruise ship struck the whale while alive or if it was already deceased. MSC Cruises emphasized its commitment to avoiding such collisions, mentioning its training with the Ocean Research & Conservation Association (ORCA) and adherence to regulations for whale protection.
Amidst the tragic discovery on the MSC Meraviglia, a heartwarming story unfolded off the coast of Tampa. A Carnival cruise ship departed on a routine voyage when the crew spotted a group of distressed individuals drifting at sea.
Upon closer inspection, the crew realized they were 27 Cuban nationals in dire need of assistance. The cruise ship promptly launched a rescue operation, bringing the individuals aboard and providing them with food, water, and shelter.
The Cuban nationals were transported to Key West, Florida, where they were met by immigration officials and Coast Guard personnel. The successful rescue highlighted the compassion and vigilance of the Carnival cruise ship's crew.
