Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has emerged from seclusion to defend his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, rejecting accusations of political motivations in his prosecution.

Former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who has kept a low profile since resigning amid a sexual harassment scandal, has made a rare public appearance on Capitol Hill. Cuomo, now appearing on HBO's "Real Time with Bill Maher," has vehemently defended his record in managing the COVID-19 pandemic and criticized the prosecution of former President Donald Trump on hush money charges.

Cuomo asserts that the New York District Attorney's case against Trump should not have been brought, arguing that it was politically motivated and eroded public trust in the justice system. He cited a poll indicating that 66% of New Yorkers believe the justice system is politicized, despite their dislike for Trump.

"The attorney general's case in New York frankly should have never been brought," Cuomo declared on "Real Time." "And New Yorkers said it – 66% said the justice system is politicized. And there's nobody in New York who likes Trump. And still, 66% said the justice system is politicized. That's why I think he's not paying the same price for these verdicts because they believe it is political."

Cuomo emphasized the importance of upholding the fairness of the justice system, arguing that the perception of political influence undermines the public's confidence in democracy. "When you have this country believing you're playing politics with the justice system and you're trying to put people in jail or convict them for political reasons, then we have a real problem," he stated.

Maher echoed Cuomo's views on the hush money trial, saying, "I don't think they should've brought that one. It was just always going to look like a sex case and people were always just going to look at it that way." Cuomo concurred, asserting that the case was pursued solely because of Trump's high-profile status.

"If his name was not Donald Trump and if he wasn't running for president – I'm the former AG of New York – I'm telling you that case would've never been brought. And that's what's offensive to people," Cuomo said. "And it should be, because if there's anything left, it's belief in the justice system."

Cuomo's appearance on Capitol Hill and his defense of his COVID handling have sparked mixed reactions. Some have hailed his willingness to speak out on public policy, while others have criticized his record as governor. Cuomo's comments on the justice system and the prosecution of Trump have also generated debate and raised questions about the politicization of the legal process.

Observers note that Cuomo's appearance may be an attempt to rehabilitate his image and return to public life. However, it remains unclear whether he will be able to overcome the allegations of sexual harassment and other controversies that led to his resignation.
