Daisy Ridley and Tilda Cobham-Hervey, stars of the new film 'Young Woman and the Sea,' discuss wearing cumbersome vintage swimming costumes for the film, which is based on a true story from the 1920s. Despite initially attributing her exhaustion to her demanding work schedule, Ridley later discovered she was suffering from an autoimmune disease.

In a recent interview with Women's Health, 'Star Wars' actress Daisy Ridley revealed that she has been diagnosed with Graves' disease, an autoimmune condition characterized by an overactive thyroid gland. Ridley initially assumed her extreme fatigue was due to her hectic work schedule, but her general practitioner later suggested she see an endocrinologist, who then diagnosed her with Graves' disease.

Graves' disease is an autoimmune disorder that affects thyroid function. The symptoms, which include hot flashes, fatigue, racing heart, weight loss, and hand tremors, can mimic those of stress, leading Ridley to initially overlook the condition. However, after receiving her diagnosis, she realized that her fatigue was more severe than she had realized.

Since her diagnosis, Ridley has implemented positive changes in her diet and lifestyle to manage her condition. She now takes daily medication and has begun following a gluten-free diet to reduce her symptoms. She has also incorporated infrared saunas, cryotherapy, acupuncture, and massages into her routine, and carries crystals with her regularly.

Ridley's diagnosis has highlighted the importance of self-care and listening to one's body. She encourages others to prioritize their well-being and not dismiss chronic symptoms as mere stress.

"I've always been health conscious, and now I'm trying to be more well-being conscious," Ridley said. "I do a fair amount of the holistic stuff, but I also understand that it is a privilege to be able to do those things."

Ridley also discussed the common issue of underdiagnosis of autoimmune diseases in women. She emphasized that women should advocate for themselves and not accept chronic discomfort as normal.

"We all read the stats about women being undiagnosed or underdiagnosed and sort of coming to terms with saying, ‘I really actually don’t feel good,’ and not going, ‘I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine, I’m fine.’ It’s just normalized to not feel good," she said.

Ridley believes that it is important for people to seek professional help if they are experiencing persistent symptoms.

"In the grand scheme of things, it’s much less severe than what a lot of people go through. Even if you can deal with it, you shouldn’t have to. If there’s a problem, you shouldn’t have to just [suffer through it]."
