The tragic incident unfolded late Thursday night near the Oak Cliff Community Center, where Burks was waiting in a parking lot between calls. Without warning, 30-year-old Corey Cobb-Bey approached Burks, initially striking up a conversation while recording the encounter on his cellphone.

Responding officers Senior Corporal Jamie Farmer and Senior Corporal Karissa David were met with gunfire upon their arrival at the scene. Farmer sustained a leg injury when Cobb-Bey grabbed a shotgun and fired at him, while David was shot in the face.
