Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn wore a shirt with the old Redskins team name incorporated into the current logo, sparking reaction online.
Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn's choice of attire has caused a stir among fans and media alike. During a recent press conference, Quinn was spotted wearing a shirt that incorporated the old Redskins team name into the current logo. The shirt had a feather on the end of the "W," which represents the team's current name.
This decision has drawn mixed reactions. Some fans have expressed support for the nod to the franchise's history, while others have criticized it as insensitive, given that the team ditched the Redskins moniker in the summer of 2020 amid heightened racial tensions across the U.S.
The Commanders organization has refrained from commenting on the matter, but several media members have weighed in. ESPN's Jason Reid questioned why Quinn would wear the shirt, suggesting that it could detract from the positive buzz surrounding the team.
Dallas Cowboys writer Clarence Hill Jr. echoed this sentiment, expressing concern that the NFL may not approve of the unauthorized use of the old logo.
However, local D.C. journalist Scott Abraham welcomed Quinn's gesture, describing it as a way to "embrace the future while also honoring the past."
Notably, the Native American Guardians Association (NAGA) also voiced support for Quinn's shirt, stating that it reflects the enduring popularity of the Redskins fandom and that the team should not expect financial support without addressing this demand.
Quinn's decision to wear the shirt is particularly noteworthy given his recent appointment as the Commanders' head coach. Prior to joining Washington, Quinn served as the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys and was head coach of the Atlanta Falcons from 2015 to mid-2020, leading the team to a Super Bowl appearance in 2016.
While Quinn has not provided any public explanation for wearing the shirt, his actions have sparked a lively debate about the team's past, present, and future. It remains to be seen how this controversy will impact the Commanders organization and Quinn's tenure as head coach.
