Danny DeVito reveals that he and his estranged wife Rhea Perlman remain a close family, despite living separately for over a decade. The pair, who split in 2012 but are still married, share a strong bond through their children, grandchildren, and shared professional experiences.
Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman may not share the same roof, but their familial bond remains unbreakable. In a recent interview with Fox News Digital, DeVito revealed that he and Perlman are "doing great" and still maintain a close relationship, despite their decision to live separately over a decade ago. The pair share three children and a granddaughter, and they frequently come together for family gatherings and special occasions.
According to DeVito, their enduring connection stems from the deep history they share. The couple met in 1970 and have been together for over 50 years. "You grow together," DeVito explained. "It's like you really know how each other's feeling all the time." They continue to maintain regular communication and participate in a lot of activities together.
Despite their separation, DeVito and Perlman have made a conscious effort to prioritize their family. They share responsibilities in raising their granddaughter, Sinclair Lucille DeVito, and recently enjoyed a family vacation together. "If you can do that... no matter what your situation is, we don't live together anymore, but we are together in a lot of ways," DeVito said.
Perlman has previously stated that she has no plans to divorce DeVito. "What for?" she said in an appearance on "Watch What Happens Live" in 2020. "There's no reason." The couple remains connected through their children and grandchildren, as well as their shared professional history. Perlman played DeVito's on-screen girlfriend in the sitcom "Taxi" and they co-starred in the iconic fantasy "Matilda."
DeVito fondly recalls those times and is proud of the bond he and Perlman have built over the years. "I loved raising them and [doing] whatever they do, whatever happens, happens," he said of his children. "I go over there a lot. I try not to be a pest, but I go over to their house." He finds immense joy in his role as a grandfather and relishes the opportunity to spend time with his granddaughter.
DeVito's children have witnessed their parents' close relationship firsthand, and he believes they have learned valuable lessons from their example. "They know what the most important thing in the world is right now," he said. "And that's that little baby. Everything else is just gravy."
DeVito recently starred in the film "Poolman," which also features Chris Pine and Annette Bening. He enjoyed the experience of collaborating with Pine and drew on his own journey as a filmmaker to portray his character. "As you go along, every time you make a movie, you learn," he said.
Beyond his acting career, DeVito also recently narrated the live concert of "Matilda," the iconic film he directed and starred in. He has fond memories of the film's production and is still trying to "get it right" when it comes to mastering the feeling of staying grounded.
"I'm always working on it – which I love," he said. "I think that there are a lot of people out there, artists, actors, directors, business people, whatever it is. Scientists are always looking, always in the bushes, trying to find what's around the corner."
