Two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters and two HC-130J Combat King 11 aircraft flew 350 nautical miles off the U.S. eastern coast to reach the Carnival Venezia and rescue a mother and her child in crisis.
In a heart-stopping rescue mission, the U.S. Air Force airlifted a mother and her child from a Carnival Cruise Line ship on Saturday, May 7. The dramatic rescue involved two HH-60G Pave Hawk helicopters, two HC-130J Combat King 11 aircraft, and teams of combat rescue officers and pararescuemen.
The rescue team flew 350 nautical miles off the U.S. eastern coast to reach the Carnival Venezia, which had set sail on April 26 from Port Canaveral, Florida, for a 10-day cruise to the Bahamas and Caribbean. Three air-to-air refuelings were necessary to reach the ship's location.
Dramatic photos capture the moment the unnamed woman and her son were hoisted up into the helicopter from the ship's deck. The mother and child were subsequently taken to a hospital in the United States.
The nature of their medical emergency remains undisclosed. Fox News Digital has reached out to Carnival Cruise Line for comment.
The rescue mission showcases the U.S. Air Force's extraordinary capabilities in responding to critical situations at sea. The mission's commander, Lt. Col. John Lowe, emphasized the importance of training in such scenarios.
"These real-world missions are what our countless hours of training have prepared us for," Lowe said. "Rescue was able to plan and execute this mission without hesitation."
The rescue team's successful completion of this mission exemplifies the synergy between various specialized units and their dedication to safeguarding lives. The joint effort of combat rescue officers, pararescuemen, and support personnel ensured the safe and timely rescue of the mother and child.
The Carnival Venezia continued its journey after the rescue, leaving behind a testament to the U.S. Air Force's unwavering commitment to protecting passengers at sea. The rescue serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and the invaluable role the military plays in ensuring the safety of those who embark on maritime adventures.
