Despite his eventual success with "The X Files" and "Californication," David Duchovny faced numerous rejections in his early career, including missing out on all three male lead roles in the beloved sitcom "Full House."
Hollywood icon David Duchovny has enjoyed tremendous success with hit shows like "The X Files" and "Californication," but his path to stardom was not without its setbacks. During an episode of his new podcast, "Fail Better," Duchovny candidly shared his experiences with failed auditions early in his career, including his unsuccessful attempts to land all three male leads in the beloved '90s sitcom "Full House."
"At first, they had me for, I think, the dad," Duchovny recalled, referring to Bob Saget's character, Danny Tanner. "And then, they had me for the [John] Stamos character. And then, they had me for the other guy (Dave Coulier's character, Joey Gladstone). I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to get one of these, and it’s going to change my life.'"

However, despite his high hopes, Duchovny did not secure any of the coveted roles. "I had plenty of those pilots that I went up for when I was first out in L.A. and I thought each one was going to be the break," he said. "I just needed to be able to pay my rent, too. That was an important thing because I just wanted a job."
Duchovny acknowledged that he missed out on numerous opportunities, admitting that he often fell short in his auditions. "I can't tell you how many shows I didn't get," he said. Ultimately, he realized that he was not suited for the roles he had been auditioning for.

"I was really bad at that kind of stuff," Duchovny explained. "I did not know how to do that sitcom stuff. I don’t know what they were thinking, that they thought I was going to exist in that world. I mean, I guess I could have learned, but I wasn’t ready, I wasn’t ready for that kind of energetic performance that they need."
Despite his early disappointments, Duchovny remained determined to succeed in the entertainment industry. He eventually found his niche in the realm of science fiction and drama, starring in the critically acclaimed series "The X Files" and later in the acclaimed comedy-drama "Californication."
