Executive Assistant Chief Jeff Carroll announced the tragic news outside MedStar Washington Hospital Center, where David was treated for his injuries before succumbing to them. "It's with a very heavy heart that I announce that Investigator Wayne David... did pass away this evening here at the hospital," Carroll said.

The incident leading to David's untimely demise unfolded along Interstate 295. An officer observed a suspicious vehicle on Quarles Street and attempted to pull the suspect over. However, the suspect fled on foot, eventually jumping from a service road area onto the southbound lanes of I-295.

During the pursuit, the suspect dropped the firearm inside a storm drain. Undeterred, David sought to retrieve the weapon, but tragedy struck when it accidentally discharged, striking him in the upper body.

Fellow officers immediately rendered aid at the scene before transporting David to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela Smith described David as "the epitome of a great officer," emphasizing his dedication and the high esteem in which he was held within the department.

A press release from the MPD detailed the events that led to the suspect's escape. After dropping the firearm, the individual jumped down from the service road area onto I-295 southbound. He then fled the scene on the back of a motorcycle.

Police are actively searching for the suspect, described as a black male with long locks, and the incident remains under investigation. David's death is being treated as a line-of-duty death, and the department vows to honor his legacy with ceremonies and tributes.

David's passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family, colleagues, and the community he served. He is survived by his daughter, son, and girlfriend. The members of the police force who had gathered outside the hospital before receiving the tragic news expressed their deep anguish and sorrow.

"This is a very tragic loss for our department and our community," Carroll said. "Our hearts go out to his family during this incredibly difficult time."
