At least 45 people have been killed following devastating flash floods and a landslide in Kenya, leaving dozens missing and widespread destruction. The disaster initially raised concerns about dam collapse, but officials have since attributed the flooding to a clogged railway tunnel.

Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki has ordered the immediate inspection of all dams and water reservoirs, both public and private, within 24 hours to avert potential future incidents. Recommendations for evacuations and resettlement will be made based on the inspection findings.

The flash floods and landslide swept through houses and cut off a major road in Kenya on Monday, leaving a trail of devastation. Vehicles were entangled in the debris on one of the country's busiest highways, and paramedics rushed to treat the injured as waters submerged large areas.

The Kenya Red Cross reported that 109 people were hospitalized, while 49 others remain missing. Eyewitness William Lokai described being awakened by a loud bang and witnessing his house rapidly fill with water. He managed to escape through the roof with his brother and children.

Ongoing heavy rains in Kenya have been relentless since mid-March, causing widespread flooding that has claimed the lives of at least 169 people. The country's Meteorology Department has warned of more rainfall, raising concerns about the potential for further flooding.

The wider East African region is also experiencing flooding due to the heavy rains. In Tanzania, 155 people have reportedly died, while over 200,000 people have been affected in neighboring Burundi.

A boat capsizing incident in Kenya's northern Garissa county on Sunday night has added to the tragedy. The Kenyan Red Cross reported rescuing 23 people, but over a dozen remain missing.

Kenya's main airport was flooded on Saturday, forcing some flights to be diverted. Videos circulating online showed the flooded runway, terminals, and cargo section of the airport.

Over 200,000 people across Kenya have been impacted by the floods, with houses in flood-prone areas submerged and residents seeking refuge in schools. President William Ruto has instructed the National Youth Service to provide land for temporary camps for those affected.

Authorities are urging residents to heed flood warnings and take precautionary measures to avoid further loss of life and property. The inspection of dams and reservoirs is expected to help identify and mitigate potential risks, ensuring the safety of communities in the future.
