"This is a senseless tragedy," Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin said. "We must come together as a community to address the issue of violence in our city."
The shooting is the latest in a series of mass shootings that have occurred across the United States in recent months. On July 4, a gunman opened fire on a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park, Illinois, killing seven people and wounding dozens more. On May 24, a gunman killed 21 people and wounded 17 others at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.
The mass shootings have reignited calls for stricter gun control laws.
"We need to take action to prevent these senseless tragedies from happening again," Woodfin said. "We must do more to keep guns out of the hands of criminals and those who should not have them."
