Despite her husband's notorious affair with Elizabeth Taylor, Debbie Reynolds maintained her squeaky-clean image and unwavering spirit, according to her son, Todd Fisher.
Debbie Reynolds, the beloved actress known for her iconic role in "Singin' in the Rain," faced one of the most public and humiliating betrayals when her husband, Eddie Fisher, left her for Elizabeth Taylor in 1958. However, according to her son, Todd Fisher, Reynolds never lost her innocence or the love of her fans.
"What you saw is who she was. She really was apple pie," said Fisher. "There was no dark side to her."
Reynolds and Fisher married in 1955 and had two children, Todd and Carrie Fisher. The scandal erupted three years later when Fisher began an affair with Taylor, who was married to Mike Todd at the time. The ensuing media storm cast Reynolds as the victim, while Taylor was vilified as a "husband stealer."
Despite the public humiliation, Reynolds refused to engage in a war of words with Taylor. Instead, she maintained her dignity and professionalism, earning the sympathy and admiration of the public.
"A lot of people were like, 'So your dad left the good girl for the bad girl.' ... Liz made no bones about being the bad girl," said Fisher. "So, when my mother was put in the position of being humiliated by my father ... my mother was a classy person."
Fisher believed that his father's decision to leave Reynolds was a mistake, fueled by the glamour and excitement surrounding Taylor.
"He didn’t think I was funny," Reynolds wrote in her 1988 memoir. "I wasn’t good in bed. I didn’t make a good gefilte fish or good chopped liver. So what did he have? A cute little girl next door with a little turned-up nose. That was, in fact, all he ever said he wanted from me. The children, he said, better have your nose."
Years later, Reynolds and Taylor forged an unlikely friendship, starring together in the 2001 film "These Old Broads." The film poked fun at the scandal, showing that Reynolds had made peace with the past.
"I don’t think the press ever forgave my dad. The public certainly didn’t," said Fisher.
Reynolds died in 2016 at the age of 84, just one day after her daughter, Carrie Fisher. Her legacy as a beloved actress and a woman of integrity continues to inspire generations.
Despite the shattered marriage and public scrutiny she endured, Debbie Reynolds never allowed the darkness of others to tarnish her own radiant spirit, a testament to her enduring strength and resilience.
